For people who are deaf or hard of hearing

  • TDD text telephone at the Main Library (617-689-8324)
  • DVDs with closed captions and subtitles in various languages
  • American Sign Language learning materials in book, video and computer software formats
  • Telex SoundMate personal listening system to help make listening easier in the Main Library community meeting room

For people who are blind or visually impaired

  • Tactile map at the Main Library and a Raynes braille and audio rail system
  • MAGic screen magnification software
  • Kurzweil 1000 software converts the printed word into speech
  • Handheld magnifier at the Main Library Reference Desk
  • Videorecordings with audio descriptions for adults and children
  • Braille books for children; braille books for adults available via interlibrary loan
  • Large type books and magazine (Reader's Digest)

For people with mobility or orthopedic impairments

  • All library buildings except Wollaston Branch have designated handicapped parking spaces in library parking lots and automatic door openers
  • All library buildings except Adams Shore Branch and Wollaston Branch have accessible bathrooms
  • Elevators to all floors (Main Library)
  • Aisles wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs (Main Library)
  • Sit-down computer terminals that accommodate wheelchairs (all locations)

For people with learning disabilities

  • Kurzweil 3000 software displays and highlights an onscreen version of any scanned printed material while reading it aloud
  • Literacy program that provides one-to-one tutoring for adults who want to learn to read, using the Wilson Reading System, a structured, sequential multi-sensory program for adults with language-based learning disabilities
  • Lexia and Ultimate Phonics educational software, which follows the teaching sequence of the Wilson Reading System
  • Computer training incorporating a one-on-one teaching model
  • CAST E-Reader software eases access to print online
  • Special collection containing abridged high-interest materials for adult new readers (Main Library)
  • Materials in non-print formats, such as audiobooks and videos

Other services and resources

  • We will answer questions by phone, email or in person whenever the library is open
  • We will search the online catalog, check shelves, and place holds for library users
  • We will retrieve library materials for any library user who finds it difficult to do so
  • Books, videos, and audiobooks on architectural adaptations and adaptive equipment, medical and social issues and services, careers and skills training, and more, are available to use in the library and to check out.
