Learning to Swim by Sara J. Henry

This debut novel grabs you from the very first page, when journalist Troy Chance sees a small boy falling into the water from a passing ferry and impulsively dives in to rescue him.  The engrossing adventure that ensues includes interesting characters, a cross-border (US/Canada) police investigation, plenty of suspense, and a somewhat unpredictable outcome.

Triple Crossing by Sebastian Rotella

This suspenseful and eye-opening first novel takes you deep inside the wild world of rampant corruption and violent organized crime in the Mexican-American border area.  Valentine Pescatore is a U.S. Border Patrol Agent who ends up acting as a double agent inside a Mexican mafia operation. Leo Mendez is the head of an elite Tijuana police unit trying to take down the Mexican mafia while surrounded by bought-and-paid-for Mexican federales and politicians. This is not your average thriller.

So Much Pretty by Cara Hoffman

This debut is more than a suspenseful psychological crime thriller. It's also an indictment of the way factory farming poisons rural America and a searing expose of violence against women, an everyday occurence conveniently denied and repressed by the residents of the small town of Haeden, N.Y., as it is by most of the rest of us most of the time.

The Black Minutes by Martin Solares

Set in a fictional Mexican port town, this novel follows the investigations of an uncle and nephew team streaching from the 1970s to current day.  An investigative journalist in current day Paracuan end up dead.  Detectove Ramon Cabrera discovers a link to a 1970s serial killer investigated by his uncle Vincente Rangel.  Solares delves into the corruption of Mexican police and politicians.  This is a great read for fans of detective fiction looking for a more exotic locations.
