Gaslight (1944)

As a fan of classic horror films, this is as close as it gets without being an actual "monster" movie.  The young heiress falls prey to the advances of a dapper piano player.  Their marriage seems to be perfect until small things turn up missing or misplaced.  Is the lady of the house just forgetful or is she losing her mind....or are more sinister minds at work?  Watch this film and find out!

King Kong (1933)

A mysterious voyage, an island surrounded by mist, a high wall built by ancients which is maintained to this day by fearful natives...if that isn't enough to get you to check out this classic film, how about dinosaurs and a great big, angry ape!!!  This film was revolutionary in its time.  Who could have imagined a romance involving a beauty and a beast...oh wait.  In any case, you'll root for the beast in this film.

Russian Ark (2003)

A unique look through Russian history as a man wanders through the Winter Palace where each new room brings a new time period. While the history is fascinating, what makes this movie unique is that it's all one long first person shot so the audience becomes the traveler. Sometimes the subtitling is a little confusing but if you can make it past that the movie is well worth watching for the visuals, the history and the knowledge of just how much work must have gone into making it.

Nowhere Boy (2011)

The story of a young John Lennon.  Raised by his rigidly strict Aunt Mimi, John struggles to find his place in the world.  Watching the girls swoon at the sight of Elvis inspires him to start a rock and roll band but John's strained relationships with his mother and aunt are the real focus of the film and offer insight into the character of the man who formed the Beatles. Check

Samurai Champloo (2004-2005)

Samurai Champloo is one of the most entertaining adventures in the samurai genre. Three unwilling companions set out on a journey across Edo period Japan.  A young woman looking for a possibly nonexistent samurai that smells like sunflowers,  a wild swordsman looking to challenge absolutely anyone who irritates him, and a taciturn ronin with a hidden past forge an unlikely bond. Though set in the 17th century,  Samurai Champloo has a hip-hop sensibility, with many modern references and themes.  The dialogue is extremely witty and the characters endearing.

The Scenesters (2011)

Hmmm, a comedy about a serial killer? Yes, it's clever and funny and has a killer indie music soundtrack while spoofing hipsters, filmmakers and the media. Definitely different but very entertaining! Check Our Catalog

Upstairs, Downstairs (2011)

This three-part series picks up a few years after the old Upstairs, Downstairs television series left off, circa 1936.  The maid, Rose (Jean Marsh) returns and there's lots of nostalgia throughout.  A bit on the sugary side but fans of the 1970s series will enjoy the trip down memory lane--and the full color production. I, Claudius (1976)

Roman history and political skullduggery come alive in this BBC miniseries. Has something of a stagey feel (in a good way), the dialogue is sharp, and the saga of the "half-wit" Roman emperor engaging. If you enjoyed HBO's "Rome" miniseries, this one picks up about where "Rome" left off. Check Our Catalog

The Tudors (2007-2010)

If you missed this four-season series on Showtime (first season aired in 2007), try it out on DVD from the library. If you like costume soaps about sex, power and political intrique, this one is addictive! Check Our Catalog
