Bunker Hill Lane (Bunker Hill Quarry)
ARCHAEOLOGICAL OR HISTORICAL SIGNFICANCE
After much exploration,. Gridley Bryant selected the present Bunker Hill Quarry to supply the granite for the Bunker Hill Monument. He bought the quarry (one main hole and three small. rear quarries) from Frederick Hardwick in 1825 selling it in 1826 to the Granite Railway Co. This quarry supplied much of the stone for the first stage of the Monument and is the site ( the original starting terminus of the Granite Railway (NR). In 1830 it was discontinued in favor of Granite Rail which had more stone and was closer to the Neponset River. In later years the quarry was used mainly for paving stones.
