World War 1 was a highly significant period for the City of Quincy. First to be remembered are the Quincy citizens who lost their lives in the war and are comemorated by this monument. A grand total of 1603 Quincy inhabitants, inclusive of ten women who served as Army nurses and exclusive of those who served under foreign flags, were in service during the war.

The war also had a profound impact on the industrial life of the city: From 1914 to 1918 Quincy shipyards and factories were in full production to meet the demnds of supplying military and naval needs. In the airport area a "victory plant" was constructed to produce torpedo - boat destroyers while the Fore River Shipyard was producing ever larger ships.
