QUINCY — The staff of the Thomas Crane Public Library are proud to be introducing two new initiatives: Audio Described Movies and Foreign Film Fridays.

Both events are free to attend and no registration is required. Both events are generously sponsored by Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library.

Audio Described Movies: “Nope”

The Thomas Crane Public Library will screen “Nope” on Friday, Feb. 2 from 2-4 p.m. in the Main Library’s Community Meeting Room, 40 Washington St.

Nope” is about Hollywood animal wrangler OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and his sister Emerald (Keke Palmer) who, following their father’s shocking death, begin observing unexplained phenomena on their vast Southern California ranch that leads them down an obsessive rabbit hole as they plot attempts to capture the mystery on camera. Along with a former child star turned family theme park ringmaster (Steven Yeun) who neighbors the siblings, the pair’s efforts to chase the spectacle soon bring terrifying consequences and unimaginable horror. The film has an R rating.

Nope” is the first movie that will be screened as part of the library’s new Audio Described Movies initiative. Audio description (also referred to as “description” or “video description”) is defined as “the verbal depiction of key visual elements in media and live productions.” Audio description is a means to inform individuals who are blind or who have low vision about visual content essential for comprehension. Audio description of video provides information about actions, characters, scene changes, on-screen text, and other visual content. The audio description of the action or the people or the scenery never interferes with the dialogue spoken by the characters.

Audio Described Movies will be hosted on the first Friday of each month.

Foreign Film Friday: “Hero ( 英雄 )”

The Thomas Crane Public Library will screen “Hero ( 英雄 )” on Friday, Feb. 16 from 2-4 p.m. in the Main Library’s Community Meeting Room, 40 Washington St.

Hero ( 英雄 )” is a martial-arts epic and “Rashomon”-style drama about a swordsman who claims to have saved a ruthless Chinese emperor from assassins. The film is rated PG-13.

Hero ( 英雄 )” will be the first movie screened as part of the Foreign Film Fridays initiative. Titles from other countries and languages will be screened on the third Friday of each month.
