Catch the Beat Movie Series
As part of this year's musical summer reading theme, we are presenting a free movie series on Thursday nights this summer. All movies will be screened at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Library. Sponsored by the Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library.

Sweet and Lowdown (1999)
Thursday, July 12 at 7:00 p.m.
PG-13
In the 1930s, Emmet Ray ruled as the second greatest jazz guitarist in the world. But offstage, and particularly in regards to his relationships with women, he was the undisputed king. Academy Award nominee Sean Penn stars in this richly textured comedic portrait, directed by Woody Allen. "A loving and comic tribute to a musical era with a standout performance by Sean Penn"--Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

Silent Movie Show
Thursday, July 19 at 7:00 p.m.
ALL AGES
Enjoy a fast-paced and entertaining evening of not-so-silent movies as silent movie master pianist Richard Hughes takes you back into the past when films were black & white with no sound tracks.
First you will learn a little about the silent movie era and
hear examples of the "mood music" that was used
to accompany silent movies. Then watch two short films starring
silent film greats Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy, plus
the 1903 classic short The Great Train Robbery. The
movie industry put plenty of charm and personality in these
old films with skillful pantomime acting, and Richard Hughes
makes them come alive with his piano accompaniment. Don't
miss this opportunity for the whole family to experience an
authentic Silent Movie Show!
Richard Hughes began playing the piano at the age of seven, beginning with classical music and later boogie-woogie, ragtime and pop. For the past ten years, he has compiled many silent movie scores taken from authentic "mood music" that was played during the 1920s. This music enhanced the movie scenes by making them "come alive" in the third dimension. Just recently, Richard has released a DVD of three Charlie Chaplin films with original musical scores that synchronize to the films. Hughes travels around Massachusetts doing hundreds of movie shows a year at schools, community centers, libraries, historical societies, and senior centers and finds that audiences of all ages laugh at the quick-paced slapstick style of acting that is reminiscent of the old Vaudeville days.

Dreamgirls (2006)
Thursday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m.
PG-13
With showstopping performances by a star-studded cast, Dreamgirls soars with the amazing story of three female singers who learn that anything is possible when you hold on to your dreams. Grammy winner Beyonce Knowles, Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx and Golden Globe winner Eddie Murphy shine in unforgettable roles, joined by Jennifer Hudson in a breakthrough performance that earned her the 2006 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. "A great movie musical has been made at last"--David Denby, The New Yorker

Coal Miner's Daughter (1980)
Thursday, August 9 at 7:00 p.m.
PG
The amazing true story of country music star Loretta Lynn, with a tour de force, Academy Award-winning performance by Sissy Spacek. "Still an irresistibly entertaining and beautifully crafted piece of moviemaking that set a new standard for biopics of musical performers"--Tim Knight, Reel.com

Masked and Anonymous (2003)
Thursday, August 23 at 7:00 p.m.
PG-13
In a fictional America caught up in a civil war that is tearing the nation apart, a benefit concert is being organized. A traveling troubadour (Bob Dylan) is sprung from jail by his scheming former manager to headline a concert with the expectations to bring peace to a country that is entrenched by chaos, lawlessness and pandemonium. The star-studded cast also includes Jeff Bridges, Penelope Cruz, John Goodman, Jessica Lange, and Luke Wilson. "Darkly humorous, full of wisdom both faux and real, and genuinely mysterious"--Ben Greenman, The New Yorker
Concerts on the Lawn
Bring a chair or a blanket and Catch the Beat this summer at the Main Library's free summer concert series for all ages, held on Sundays in July at 3:00 p.m. Concerts last for one hour and will be held in the atrium in case of inclement weather. Sponsored by the Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library.

Jumpin' Juba
Sunday, July 15 at 3:00 p.m.
This blues duo will kick off the series and get your feet stomping with their get-down blues party music, showcasing Steve Hurl's guitar work and big-time vocals and Bruce Ward's barrelhouse piano. With a repertoire ranging from New Orleans blues to boogie-woogie to 50s rock and beyond, this lively duo will please everyone in the crowd! Steve Hurl and Bruce Ward are both veteran performers and combined their talents as Jumpin' Juba in 1999, playing in over 200 locations since then. Their CD, Bumpity Bump, was released in 2004.

New England Percussion Ensemble
Sunday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m.
The New England Percussion Ensemble presents their electrifying program, Language of the Ancients. Journey through time, from the days of sticks, stones, and skin-covered hollow logs to the "found" instruments of today--plastic tubes, trash bags snapped in the air, and newspapers torn in time to foot-stomping accompaniment. The truly ancient language of percussion is presented with a blend of performance and hands-on audience participation, so be prepared to open your ears and shake your spirit. You will never think of percussion as "just drums" again! This concert will be held in the atrium rain or shine, due to the unique nature of the performance.
The New England Percussion Ensemble is a trio of professional percussionists who have performed concerts since 1992, presenting their energetic programs to over a quarter million youngsters and adults across New England.

The Remnants
Sunday, July 29 at 3:00 p.m.
This roots-music quartet combines compelling vocal harmonies with solid instrumentals in a performance of folk, country, bluegrass and gospel music. They will get your feet tapping whether they are performing their own original songs or those of folk frontiersman Bob Dylan or country legend Hank Williams. The Remnants are Joe Pereira on vocals, guitar, fiddle, and harmonica; Ellen Breen on vocals and guitar; Steve Lemma on vocals, guitar and mandolin; and Jason Costa on vocals and bass. The Remnants have performed at many outdoor events, festivals and coffeehouses throughout Southern New England.

July Exhibit: Visual Sensations

South Shore photographer Steven David Roberts will exhibit his photographs from July 1 to 31 in the Coletti Reading Room on the first floor of the Main Library. A public reception will be held on Thursday, July 12 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Roberts uses digital photography to capture the visual sensations that surround us naturally. "My goal is to present images that reveal themselves the more one studies them. I want my work to invoke an emotional response, not only the first time someone experiences it, but every time."
Roberts has had a longstanding interest in photography and has seriously pursued the craft for the past few years. As an active outdoorsman, he is rarely without a camera and many of his favorite images were captured while hiking, kayaking, and sailing. "My photography is a work-in-process as I continue to develop my technique and artistic style. I hope my photography never stops evolving and that every day brings new opportunities to view and capture the world from a fresh perspective." To see some of Roberts' work online, go to SDR Images.
