This special browsing collection for literacy adult readers is located on the first floor of the Main Library (next to the study room), and is available for public use. It is arranged differently than other library collections. Books are divided into the following three, color-coded categories: The New Reader (NR) collection includes reading material ranging from 0 to 3rd grade and has a yellow-colored spine label. The Adult Basic Education (ABE) collection includes reading material ranging from 4th grade and up and has a green-colored spine label. The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) collection is for English language learners and has a purple-colored spine label.
NR = New Reader Collection (Reading Level 0-3) = Yellow labels
ABE = Adult Basic Education Collection (Reading Level 4+) = Green labels
ESOL = English for Speakers of Other Languages (English Language Learners) = Purple labels
Most books are not marked with a reading level; however, newer purchases indicate the level in the upper right hand corner of the first page. Most readers can open a book and judge a reading level from the amount of white space on a page, length of the words and sentences, and vocabulary level.
You may check books out on a student's library card, and most books in these collections can be checked out for an extended borrowing time of 3 months.
If you have any questions about the collection, please do not hesitate to contact the Literacy Office at 617-376-1314.
