New Reader Collection

The Literacy Collection is a browsing collection located on the second floor next to the study room and is available for public use. It is cataloged differently from Dewey Decimal System to make access easier for new readers. Call numbers begin with NR and range from 2 to 54. The numbers represent a topic or section of the collection. Shelves are labeled.

Most books are not marked with a reading level; however, newer purchases indicate the level in the upper right hand corner of the first inside page. Most readers can open a book and judge an approximate reading level from the amount of white space on a page, length of the words and sentences, and vocabulary level.

Books may be checked out on the student’s library card. LVM-Quincy students and tutors using these texts may keep them for 3 months.

If you plan on having books sent to you via interlibrary loan, write down the book number and title for future use because the browsing nature of cataloging makes locating the books in the library computer difficult. This information will help you locate the book in the computer.

Quote: I first decided I needed to learn how to read when my ex-wife was no longer there to read for me. I always thought I was too old to learn but the mail went unopened and the bills went unpaid. So then it became a matter of survival. R.S.
