Ancestry Library Edition
From the Library
Researchers inside the Library buildings (including branches) have full access to this online genealogical resource. Ancestry offers a wealth of information in an easy-to-use format, including:

  • Over 4,000 databases and 4 billion names
  • U.S., U.K., Canada, Ireland, and other countries
  • Census data, maps, military, immigration, DAR records, slave stories, and more

New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS)
From the Library
The Thomas Crane Library's institutional NEHGS membership allows genealogical researchers within Library buildings (including branches) to access over 2,200 databases on the NEHGS Web site. The most popular databases are:

  • Cemetery Transcriptions
  • Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910
  • Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850
  • The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 1847-1994
  • Social Security Death Index

A Master Search option offers cross-database searching by name only, but the search parameters may be narrowed by location, date range, and record type.

Boston Public Library
With a BPL library card, access these online databases from home: Biography and Genealogy Master Index, HeritageQuest, Boston Globe & Herald Obituary Database, and three historical newspaper databases. If you are a Massachusetts resident, you can sign up online for a BPL eCard to obtain immediate access to BPL electronic resources.

Ellis Island Records
Search Port of New York passenger arrival lists, by passenger name or by ship. This free service is provided by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc.

National Cemetery Association Nationwide Gravesite Locator
Search for the records of veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. Includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service branch and rank if known, cemetery information, and grave location in the cemetery.
