Tutor Commitments

We ask that our tutors

  • have the ability to work with diverse groups and be sensitive to the difficultities that adult learners encounter
  • make a one-year commitment to the program, give two hours of tutoring and an hour of preparation time per week
  • meet your student at a public location at a convenient time that works for the both of you
  • attend one in-service program and one tutor meeting per year
  • report tutoring hours to the literacy office on a monthly basis
  • communicate with literacy staff on an ongoing basis for advice, to get new materials, to practice writing lesson plans or to share your student's achievements and goals
  • submit a student story in April (written by the student) for the student journal that is published once a year
  • if possible, attend the "Recognition Ceremony" when students and tutors all come together to celebrate their hard work
  • share your knowledge and experiences with other tutors
  • laugh and smile a lot, learn from your student and enjoy the experience
