Cultural Literacy & Turtle Island with Brad Lopes (Aquinnah Wampanoag)
Wednesday, November 20 from 7 – 8 PM
Community Meeting Room, Main Library, 40 Washington St. Quincy, MA

This November, the Thomas Crane Public Library invites the community to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor and recognize the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in the United States. National Native American Heritage Month was established in 1990 after years of advocacy and collaboration, bringing awareness to the diversity and significance of Native American heritage.

The Thomas Crane Public Library invites everyone to join us for our featured event, “Cultural Literacy & Turtle Island,” on Wednesday, November 20, from 7 – 8 PM at the Main Library on 40 Washington St. in Quincy, MA. This program will explore the role of cultural literacy in developing respectful and accurate narratives about Indigenous communities. Our guest speaker, Brad Lopes (Aquinnah Wampanoag), will delve into how historical literature and narrative-making practices have impacted and, at times, been shaped by the Indigenous peoples of these lands and waterways. Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A session where attendees can engage further with these important topics.

Later in the month, join us for an online book talk on Native Nations: A Millennium in North America on Monday, November 25, from 7 – 8 PM on ZoomRegistration is required to receive the Zoom link.

Throughout the month, be sure to explore our in-library displays featuring curated books and media related to Native American heritage. Our Online Library is also available 24/7 with digital access to ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music, and language-learning tools that highlight Indigenous voices, languages, history, and stories.

Celebrate, learn, and connect with us this November as we honor Native American Heritage Month at the Library!

The “Cultural Literacy & Turtle Island” program is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library.
