QUINCY — The staff of the Thomas Crane Public Library invites community members to the many educational and entertaining in-person events that will be hosted during the month of May.

Concerts at the Crane: Elizabeth & Ben Anderson ~ Fiddle & Cello

  • Sunday, May 5 from 3-4 p.m.
  • Richardson Building, Main Library, 40 Washington St.

Community members are invited to join the staff of the Thomas Crane Public Library for an afternoon concert with sibling fiddle and cello duo Elizabeth and Ben Anderson. Blending Scottish tunes with lively rhythms and innovative harmonies, the pair create a sound rooted in tradition, inspired by the contemporary, and completely original.

The Richardson Building seats a maximum of 100 and on some occasions the library has to turn people away when capacity is reached. On Sundays, if the library parking lot is full, overflow parking is available in front of the Coddington Building, across the street from the Library on Coddington Street.

Doors open 15 minutes before the start of the performance. If community members prefer to watch from home, the event will also be live streamed to the library’s YouTube channel and recorded and aired at a later date on QATV.

Piping Plovers on Wollaston Beach 

  • Wednesday, May 8 from 7-8 p.m.
  • Community Meeting Room in the Main Library, 40 Washington St. 

Join Lis Kernan (she/they), a conservation biologist and shorebird recovery program coordinator with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, to learn the story of the Piping Plovers on Wollaston Beach. Community members are invited to discover how everyone has a role to play in the birds’ ability to flourish, from the day they hatch to the moment they embark on their long journey south for the winter, and when they return to beaches in the spring.

Tai Chi Performance and Class

  • Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • Community Meeting Room in the Main Library, 40 Washington St. 

Community members are invited to join staff members for a performance from the QARI Tai Chi Team. The Team will demonstrate how the exercise’s slow and intentional movements help to improve mental and physical health. Attendees are welcome to join the group at the end of the performance to learn how to perform Tai Chi.

Friends Annual Meeting with Adam Centamore: The History and Production of Chocolate

  • Tuesday, May 14 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Community Meeting Room in the Main Library, 40 Washington St. 

The Friends of the Thomas Crane Library invite current members and the public to join them at their annual meeting. The business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a presentation from guest speaker Adam Centamore at 7 p.m.

Centamore, a culinary educator, writer and journalist, will discuss the origins of chocolate, how it is made, what makes good chocolate so much better than bad chocolate and other morsels. Guests will have the opportunity to sample different chocolates.

Money Matters: Insights into 2024’s Political and Financial Terrain

  • Wednesday, May 15 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Community Meeting Room in the Main Library, 40 Washington St. 

Community members are invited to join financial advisor Bridge McSurely for an informational deep dive into various current financial wellness topics including the 2024 election outlook, recent legislative changes to retirement accounts, outlook on government spending, debt, and taxes, and financial planning opportunities for 2024.

Attendees can enjoy light snacks & refreshments.

DOVE Lawyer in the Library!

  • Friday, May 17 from 2-4 p.m.
  • 1st Floor Conference Room, Main Library, 40 Washington St.

DOVE (Domestic Violence Ended) attorneys will be on-site to talk with people who have experienced abuse or have loved ones who have experienced abuse by an intimate partner and have legal questions about divorce, custody, child support, restraining orders, immigration or other related legal issues. DOVE attorneys will provide general legal information, answer questions, and help with referrals for other services like counseling and safety planning. They offer telephone interpretation for most languages. DOVE’s services are free and completely confidential.

DOVE is a non-profit organization that provides supportive services to domestic violence survivors and their families, including legal advice and advocacy, one-on-one counseling, safety planning, support groups, education, and emergency shelter. DOVE is located in Quincy and serves survivors across Norfolk County.

Concerts at the Crane: Roman Rudnytsky ~ Piano

  • Sunday, May 19 from 3-4 p.m.
  • Richardson Building, Main Library, 40 Washington St.

Join Roman Rudnytsky for a Sunday afternoon piano concert. Rudnytsky, an American concert pianist with a Ukrainian background, graduated from The Juilliard School in New York and has since performed in 100 countries.

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month Trivia Night 

  • Tuesday, May 21 from 7-8 p.m.
  • Richardson Building, Main Library, 40 Washington St.

Join Thomas Crane Public Library for a special Trivia Night celebration in honor of AAPI Heritage Month. Attendees can participate individually or as a team. Members of the Thomas Crane staff invite community members to come connect, learn, and celebrate the rich diversity of AAPI culture.

Book Talk – Left for Dead: Shipwreck, Treachery, and Survival at the Edge of the World

  • Wednesday, May 29 from 7-8 p.m.
  • Community Meeting Room in the Main Library, 40 Washington St.

Join author Eric Jay Dolin as he discusses his new book, Left for Dead: Shipwreck, Treachery, and Survival at the Edge of the World. The book tells the true story of a wild and fateful encounter between an American sealing vessel, a shipwrecked British brig, and a British warship in the Falkland archipelago during the War of 1812.
