QUINCY — The staff of the Thomas Crane Public Library are proud to host many online events throughout May that will give members the opportunity to explore many different topics from the comfort of their own homes.

Introduction to “My China Roots” Genealogy Database with Boston Public Library

  • Wednesday, May 1 from 12-1 p.m. 

The Thomas Crane Public Library has added My China Roots, a genealogy resource from the Boston Public Library (BPL), to their list of Local History & Genealogy databases, which can be found here.

The My China Roots database requires a BPL card or ecard. Any Massachusetts resident can sign up for a free BPL card or ecard. Register for a BPL ecard here

In this virtual webinar, Head of My China Roots Collections Coletide Yap will provide an introduction to Chinese family history research including how to get started, key challenges, and what clues to look for both at home and online. She will also provide a live demo of the My China Roots database, including how to find your Chinese surname, how to find your ancestral village in China, and how to find your Chinese family tree book (jiapu). “Art Across Asia: Glorious Civilizations – An Exploration of Southeast Asia”

  • Sunday, May 5 from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Community members are invited to join a discussion with experts from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco as they explore Southeast Asia through the religious and secular art of this fascinating region. Each month will focus on a unique topic from this vast, diverse and ever-evolving continent. Register for the Zoom link here. 

Literary Cafe Presents: Writing Young Adult Novels

  • Wednesday, May 8 from 7-8 p.m. 

This Literary Cafe event will highlight three Boston-based young adult authors: T.M. Blanchett, Jennifer De Leon and Desmond Hall. The authors will discuss how they interpret and embrace young adult stories, as well as what drew them to the young adult genre and the development of their writing careers.

Democracy Talks: Access to Books in the Context of Mass Incarceration

  • Tuesday, May 21 from 7-8 p.m. 

Community members are invited to hear from the Executive Director of the Prison Book Program in Quincy, Kelly Brotzman. She will discuss mass incarceration in the United States, the role of education in reducing recidivism, the critical role books play for people in prison and Prison Book Program’s role in getting reading material to folks behind bars.

The Prison Book Program in Quincy is a 50-year old nonprofit organization devoted to sending free high-quality books and reading materials to people in prisons and jails across the country. Under Kelly’s leadership, the organization has grown tremendously, holding nearly 200 volunteer sessions per year and expanding to serve incarcerated readers in all 50 states. Science Cafe: Materials and Medicine With MIT Professor and Inventor Robert Langer

  • Tuesday, May 28 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. 

Join Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and inventor Robert Langer for a discussion about his experiences and inventions in the field of nanomedicine and drug delivery. Langer’s research has developed remarkable breakthroughs, his patents have been licensed or sub-licensed by over 400 companies, and he has also co-founded many companies including Moderna.
